‘Sqiud Game’ makes Emmy history

Squid Game continues to dominate and has made history with Tuesday’s Emmy nominations, becoming the first non-English language drama to be nominated for best drama. The Korean hit series received a nod in the “Outstanding Drama Series” category and will vie for the award against Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Severance, Ozark, Succession, Stranger Things, and Yellowjackets. Lee Jung-jae also received a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series and Director Hwang Dong-hyuk was also nominated for Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series.

Hwang Dong-hyuk’s inspiration for the series is now about to cross over into real life. Last month, Netflix announced it greenlit a new Squid Game reality series (Squid Game: The Challenge), where 456 players will compete to win $4.56 million — the largest cast and cash prize in reality TV history.

Squid Game remains Netflix’s top viewed series and earned 14 Emmy nods in its freshman year. Oh Yeong-su, was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in A Drama Series while Lee You-mi received a nod for Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
The 74th Emmy Awards ceremony is slated for Sept. 12 and will air on NBC.
