Review: ‘Tetris’ Lines Up To Be A Clever, Entertaining, and Nostalgic Watch

In a cinematic twist as surprising as the iconic falling blocks, Tetris the movie delivers a masterstroke of cleverness, creativity, and pure entertainment. Jon S. Baird’s electrifying film mirrors its namesake game by piecing together an extraordinary tale where he and screenwriter Noah Pink capture both the spirit of an underdog and the relentless drive for individuality. Prepare to be captivated. As the plot unfolds, we see what happens when capitalism goes up against communism and passion goes head-to-head with greed.

Nikita Efremov’s portrayal of Alexey Pajitnov, the mastermind behind Tetris, adds depth to the story’s foundation. As the Iron Curtain conceals his groundbreaking creation, a spark of potential ignites across the globe. Enter Taron Egerton’s Henk Rogers, a passionate programmer that brings the screen to life. Egerton’s magnetic performance elevates the film, immersing viewers in Henk’s audacious quest to secure the elusive licensing rights.

As Baird navigates the labyrinthine corridors of business negotiations, audiences are treated to a whirlwind of colorful characters and dizzying double-crosses. Toby Jones as weaselly Robert Stein and Roger Allam as publishing magnate Robert Maxwell shine in their roles, providing a rollercoaster of emotions that punctuate the narrative’s intensity. The film’s pacing occasionally falters amidst its complexity. Some of the characters seem a bit archetypal. Still, Baird’s ingenuity keeps the momentum alive through visual delight and narrowly touching on some thriller-like tones.

Amidst the electrifying drama, Tetris doesn’t shy away from the historical context of a crumbling Soviet Union. The tension is palpable, yet the film maintains an irrepressible spirit. A memorable scene in an underground nightclub captures the growing fervor for freedom, painting a vivid picture of the blocks of change falling into place.

At its core, wrapped in nostalgia, Tetris celebrates the bond between two men—Alexey and Henk—each wrestling with their own battles. Their camaraderie and shared passion are heartwarming, reminding us that sometimes, trust is the ultimate winning move. Fast-paced, engaging, and brimming with buoyancy, Tetris is a triumph that captures the essence of a game that changed the world.

Whether you’re a die-hard Tetris fan or a newcomer, this film is a must-watch experience that stacks up brilliantly. Tetris is out on Apple TV+ now.
