Review: No Other Choice (2025) – Park Chan-wook dives back into the chaos of human nature

In No Other Choice, director Park Chan-wook returns with another dark psychological story, this time centered on Man-su, played by Lee Byung-hun, an ordinary man whose life begins to unravel in shocking ways. As his circumstances spiral out of control, Man-su finds himself making decisions that lead him down an increasingly violent and unpredictable path.

Park Chan-wook has built a career exploring the darker corners of human behavior, and this film is no exception. The story is messy, chaotic, and at times completely outrageous in the reasons behind the murders. But somehow, through Park’s direction and Lee Byung-hun’s performance, the audience finds themselves leaning in instead of pulling away. You may not agree with what the character does, but the film keeps pushing you to understand how he got there.

Lee Byung-hun is fantastic in the role. He plays Man-su with a quiet intensity that makes the character both unsettling and strangely compelling. Even as things become more violent and morally questionable, you’re still watching closely, trying to piece together the logic behind the madness.

That ability to pull viewers into something morally complicated is where Park Chan-wook really shines as a storyteller. He doesn’t ask the audience to excuse the character’s behavior, but he does ask you to sit with it and watch it unfold.

Is this a comfortable film to watch? Not really. But if you’re familiar with Park Chan-wook’s work, you already know that’s kind of the point.

No Other Choice is now playing in select theaters and is scheduled for a wider release on January 15, 2026.
