Review: Hoppers (2026) – Pixar delivers a hilarious adventure with heart

In Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers, an animal-loving college student uses experimental technology that allows her consciousness to “hop” into a robotic beaver so she can communicate with animals and stop a development project threatening their habitat. Directed by Daniel Chong and written by Jesse Andrews, the film also features the voices of Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, and Dave Franco.

The film is original, very funny, and surprisingly emotional. At its center is Mabel voiced by Piper Curda, an earnest and curious young woman who grew up exploring the lake near her grandmother’s home and developed a deep love for nature and wildlife. Curda brings warmth and determination to the role, making Mabel an unlikely heroine who isn’t afraid to bend the rules if it means protecting the place that shaped her childhood.

The animal world she enters is just as entertaining. Bobby Moy-ni-han voices King George, the calm and thoughtful beaver Leader of a self-created animal sanctuary where creatures have gathered after being displaced. George keeps the peace by enforcing what he calls “Pond Rules,” a set of guidelines meant to keep order in an already overcrowded refuge. On the other side of the conflict is “smooth-talking” Mayor Jerry Generazzo (voiced by Jon Hamm), he’s a character you love to hate.

Director Daniel Chong and writer Jesse Andrews clearly have a strong vision here. The animation is beautiful, capturing the richness of nature while still leaning into Pixar’s playful imagination. Just as impressive is the way the film delivers its environmental message. It encourages conversations about protecting wildlife and caring for the natural world without ever feeling heavy-handed.

Ultimately, Hoppers is Pixar at its best: heartfelt storytelling, big laughs, and characters you genuinely connect with. Don’t be surprised if you leave the theater texting loved ones the word “Squish” and sending beaver and lizard emojis along the way.

Hoppers is in theaters now.
