Movies To Watch Now That Summer Kicks Off

The summer solstice officially starts on Thursday, marking the official start of summer. It’s a time for sunshine, the beach, pools, and movies! Taking a break from the heat and going to cool off at the movie theaters is a summer tradition, and there are many movies to look forward to during these hot months. Here are some of the major films hitting theaters this summer.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

In this Mad Max prequel, Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of Furiosa before she crosses paths with Mad Max. Taylor-Joy stars in this post-apocalyptic film alongside Chris Hemsworth, who plays Warlord Dementus, leader of a great biker horde. George Miller, the creator/director of the Mad Max films, also co-wrote the script and directed this new installment in the saga. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is already in theaters.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Miami’s finest return to the big screen. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence team up again as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett to take on Miami’s drug criminals. This time, the longtime partners must help clear their former boss’ name as the cartels try to tarnish Captain Howard’s (Joe Pantoliano) memory. Alexander Ludwig, Vanessa Hudgens, Paola Núñez, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, and Tiffany Haddish join the dynamic duo in this action-packed movie. Bad Boys: Ride or Die is in theaters now.

Inside Out 2

This summer, families are in for a treat with the Inside Out sequel, Inside Out 2. This feel-good animated movie sees the return of Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Tony Hale), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) as they continue helping Riley (Kensington Tallman), only this time they have newcomers Anxiety (Maya Hawke),  Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui or boredom (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) to help them (although not always helpful) guide her through the next phase of her life. Inside Out 2 is in theaters now.

A Quiet Place: Day One

As it’s become increasingly customary, it’s never too early to start getting in the Halloween mood with scary movies. This summer, audiences are getting a prequel to the A Quiet Place movies with A Quiet Place: Day One, which tells the story of the day aliens arrived on Earth. Joseph Quinn, Lupita Nyong’o, and Alex Wolff star in this origin story, which hits theaters June 28.

Despicable Me 4

Another highly anticipated family animated film coming to theaters this summer is Despicable Me 4. Loveable former villain Gru and his minions return for another adventure, facing off against a new nemesis in Maxine Le Mal and his girlfriend Valentina, who force Gru and his family to go on the run. Steve Carell reprises his role as the voice of Gru alongside Kristen Wiig as the voice of Lucy Wilde. Will Ferrell will voice Maxine Le Mal, and Sofía Vergara will voice Valentina. Despicable Me 4 will arrive in theaters in time for the July 4th holiday on July 3.

Deadpool & Wolverine

The Merc with a Mouth returns for a third movie with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Deadpool. Audiences will finally see Deadpool and Wolverine together in the same film. If that were not enough, Hugh Jackman returns to play the famous X-Man again. This film will feature a star-studded cast with former superheroes making an appearance, such as Jennifer Garner as Elektra, and a rumored appearance from Patrick Stewart as Professor X. Deadpool & Wolverine lands in theaters on July 26.
