Review: High Ground (2025) – A Modern Western Done Right
In the action-thriller High Ground, a border town sheriff, played by Charlie Weber, faces serious trouble when a mysterious prisoner lands in his jail, setting off the wrath of a brutal cartel. The film also stars Henry Thomas, Jon Voight, and Katherine McNamara.
The film is a fresh take on a familiar approach to the Western genre with its classic Western storytelling structure, where the good guys are noble and the bad guys are truly evil. It’s a straightforward, action-packed ride that delivers exactly what you’d want—gunfights, standoffs, and a final shootout that doesn’t disappoint.
Director James Bamford is known for his high-impact action sequences: Every fight, chase, and gunfight is executed with precision and is fun to watch. The stunt work and action performances really elevate the film. And, of course, the final showdown delivers that classic Western feel—windows breaking, bullets whizzing, and witnessing justice served.
The film is popcorn-esque in terms of how deep and complex the character development is; spoiler alert – I didn’t care because I found myself engaged and entertained!
If you want to lose yourself for an evening and love films where the heroes are truly heroic and the villains are worth rooting against, High Ground is for you. It’s a modern take on the genre that doesn’t overcomplicate things – it just delivers a great time.
High Ground will be available on digital platforms and streaming services on March 18th.
