From Making Movies with Friends to Unexpected Fame: Curry Barker on Obsession

Hollywood First Look sits down with writer, director, and editor Curry Barker to explore his breakout horror film Obsession, a twisted love story about a young man whose wish to win over his crush turns into a terrifying nightmare.
Having written, directed, and edited the film himself, Curry reveals the challenges of making difficult creative decisions when you’re attached to every part of the story. He explains why cutting a scene isn’t always as simple as removing it, especially when doing so creates gaps that may require additional filming to resolve.
The conversation also explores one of the film’s most revealing moments, when Bear’s true motivations become clearer and audiences suddenly find themselves questioning the character they’ve been following. Curry shares why writing that turning point was particularly satisfying and how it changes the audience’s relationship with Bear.
On a more personal note, Curry reflects on his journey from making movies with friends on almost no budget to experiencing a level of success he never anticipated. While the recognition has been exciting, he admits that being approached by fans in public is something he’s still getting used to, especially when he spots groups of people who look like the perfect audience for Obsession.
