Netflix has released a new look at Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and it’s just as fantastical as you would imagine. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker reinvents the classic tale with a whimsical, stop-motion film that carries the same appeal as The Shape of Water director’s previous works.
Based on Carlo Collodi’s classic story of the wooden marionette, del Toro and Mark Gustafson reimagine a world where a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto brings to life an ever-curious Pinocchio who seeks to find his place in this world.
The Pan’s Labyrinth director co-directs with Gustafson and is joined by an all-star cast who lend their voices to the screen. The cast includes Ewan McGregor (Cricket), David Bradley (Geppetto), Gregory Mann (Pinocchio), Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton.
Guillermo del Toro penned the script with Patrick McHale. The Oscar winner also produces alongside Gary Ungar, Alex Bulkley, Corey Campodonico (Shadow Machine), and Lisa Henson (Jim Henson Company).
Pinocchio is coming to select theaters in November and will be available on Netflix in December 2022.
