FIRST LOOK: Netflix Releases ‘The Crown’ Season 5 Trailer

Grab your tea and crumpets because Netflix released the first trailer for The Crown season 5. The series is set to return on November 9 with a new cast.

The fifth season of the highly acclaimed drama series will transport viewers to the ‘90s, a turbulent decade for the Mountbatten-Windsors and the British monarchy. The trailer opens with a dramatic image of Windsor Castle in flames befitting the drama-filled decade that was characterized by numerous divorces, tragic events, and death.

With the new season comes a new slate of actors stepping into key roles. Imelda Staunton will pick up the mantle as Queen Elizabeth II alongside Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip. Elizabeth Debicki takes over the role of Princess Diana, while Dominic West takes over the role of Prince Charles. Other actors taking over key roles include Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, and Claudia Harrison as Princess Anne. Jonny Lee Miller will take on the role of Prime Minister John Major.

Staunton addressed the expectations people had of her portraying the queen, “What has been nice, and I hope I don’t prove them wrong, is people saying, ‘I’m really looking forward to seeing her as the queen,’’’ per Tudum. She added, “So, let’s just hope that works out for them because I’ve done it. Nothing I can do about it now!”

Debicki also spoke with Tudum about the new season of The Crown, talking about what it was like in the ’90s. With everything being filmed at that time and the birth of the 24-hour news cycle, it gave the team an incredible amount of content to access. “Diana was the most photographed person in the world at that time,” she explained in the article. “As an actor, you open the portal and this huge tsunami of information comes at you. I happily swam around in it.”

Both West and Williams believe the series is not meant to recreate historical moments but rather tell the story through a lens of imagined conversations and intimate moments the members of the British monarchy could have experienced during the tumultuous times the series explores, according to the Tudum article.

Netflix also released the first images of the new cast earlier this month through Tudum, which you can see here.
