As you sit and recount the things you are grateful for this Thanksgiving, add this memoir to your watch list. Based on the book Oblivion, Memories of My Father is about Héctor Abad Gómez, a prominent doctor and human rights activist in 1970s-era Colombia in Medellín.
The story is told through the lens of his only son, Héctor Abad Faciolince, one of the most outstanding writers in contemporary Colombia. Despite the worries he has for the well-being of his children and the middle and lower classes he fights for, nothing could prepare him for the debilitating cancer that takes the life of one of his daughters. The poignancy of this film will open your eyes to the suffering of a father and what happens when society persecutes a brilliant man for his beliefs. The film stars Javier Camara, Nicolas Reyes Cano, Juan Pablo Urrego, and Patricia Tamayo and is helmed by Academy Award-winning director Fernando Trueba.
After a successful opening in New York and Miami, Memories of My Father debuts in Los Angeles and San Francisco on November 25. The movie will be screened at Laemmle Royal on Santa Monica Blvd., Laemmle Town Center 5 in Encino, and at the Landmark’s Opera Plaza in San Francisco. Additional markets include Miami, Coral Gables, Boca Raton, Puerto Rico, Boston, Chicago, and more.
