First Look: ‘Joy Ride’ is a grand adventure packed with R-rated fun

Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu are taking audiences on a wild trip with Joy Ride. The trailer for the new film dropped just before the March 17 world premiere at SXSW, teasing a raunchy and hilarious look ahead of the movie’s July 7 theatrical release date.

Joy Ride marks Adele Lim’s directorial debut and is co-written with Teresia Hsiao and Cherry Chavapravatdumrang. Lim penned Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon, while Hsiao and Chavapravatdumrang are both known for Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens. All three serve as producers, along with Point Grey’s Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Josh Fagen. Meredith Wieck and Chisom Ude from Lionsgate will oversee the film.

Joy Ride follows four unlikely friends who embark on an international adventure laced with accidental drug smuggling, K-Pop impersonations, and a solid nod to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. Ashley Park stars as Audrey, Sherry Cola as her childhood best friend Lolo, Stephanie Hsu as Kat, Audrey’s college friend turned Chinese soap star, and Sabrina Wu as Deadeye, Lolo’s eccentric cousin. When their journey through China goes awry, their story becomes one of bonding, friendship, belonging, and wild debauchery.

Joy Ride also stars Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians), Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Alexander Hodge (Insecure), and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians).
