First Look: ‘Genie,’ A Magical Holiday Comedy from Richard Curtis, Arrives on Peacock this November

Are you ready for a heartwarming and hilarious holiday treat this Christmas season? Well, get ready to make your wishes come true because “Genie” is coming to Peacock on November 22. This whimsical fairytale comedy, penned by none other than Richard Curtis, the Oscar®-nominated screenwriter behind beloved classics like “Love Actually,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” and “Notting Hill,” is set to sprinkle some enchantment into your holiday festivities.

The story centers around Flora, a genie portrayed by Oscar® nominee Melissa McCarthy, who has been trapped inside an antique jewelry box for over two millennia due to a teeny-tiny misunderstanding with a sorcerer back in 77 B.C. After enduring centuries of being summoned to grant wishes for gold doubloons and hot babes by greedy men, Flora’s magical life takes an unexpected turn.

Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu takes on the role of Bernard Bottle, a man whose life is quickly spiraling out of control. Bernard’s relentless focus on work has caused him to neglect his wife, Julie (Tony nominee Denée Benton), and miss important moments in his young daughter Eve’s (Jordyn McIntosh) life. When he misses Eve’s birthday, Julie decides it’s time for a trial separation, and to make matters worse, Bernard’s tyrannical boss (Tony winner Alan Cumming) fires him.

Alone and sad in his New York City apartment, Bernard stumbles upon the jewelry box containing Flora. Inadvertently, he releases the ancient genie, hoping that she might be able to help him reunite with his family. But is it even possible, or is it just a wild, far-fetched dream? As Flora and Bernard navigate the complexities of their unlikely friendship, they’ll discover that love and a sprinkle of holiday magic can work wonders.

The film boasts a supporting cast that includes Screen Actors Guild nominee Marc Maron, Screen Actors Guild winner Luis Guzmán, Tate Ellington, and Tony winner LaChanze, making it a must-watch holiday film.

“Genie” is brought to you by Working Title, the Oscar®-nominated producers responsible for hits like “The Theory of Everything,” “Darkest Hour,” “Love Actually,” and “About a Boy.” Directed by Sam Boyd, known for his work on “In A Relationship” and the acclaimed series “Love Life,” the film is a brilliant blend of talent and creativity. The screenplay, written by Richard Curtis, is based on his 1991 teleplay “Bernard and the Genie,” ensuring a delightful and heartwarming story for the holiday season.

“Genie” is produced by Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, Riva Marker, and Richard Curtis. Additionally, it’s executive produced by Melissa McCarthy, alongside Caroline Jaczko, Nicole King, Stacy O’Neil, Alexandra Loewy, and Sarah-Jane Robinson.

Your wish is about to come true. “Genie” arrives on Peacock November 22.
