Domee Shi’s heartwarming animated coming-of-age story is still winning over fans and critics worldwide. As the first woman ever to solely direct a Pixar feature film, Shi is breaking down boundaries across the board. The Academy Award-winning director was recently promoted to a leadership position at Pixar, having been named vice president of creative, accompanying directors Andrew Stanton, Peter Sohn, and Dan Scanlon.
Last week, Pixar’s “Turning Red” went from theaters to Disney+ and became the No.1 leader in Nielsen’s weekly streaming chart, beating out Netflix’s “The Adam Project,” one of Netflix’s most-watched films ever on a global basis. Nielsen measures viewing via a TV set for Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix.
“Turning Red” collected 1.7 billion minutes of viewing, outpacing the popular Ryan Reynold’s film, which came in at No.4 with 1.36 billion minutes. Netflix came in second and third with “The Last Kingdom” and the new thriller series “Pieces of Her.”
The audience for “Turning Red” has a 40 percent multicultural makeup. Forty-three percent are ages 2-11, per Nielsen. Befitting the central mythology and storyline, its viewers were twice as likely to be from Asian homes.
Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” debuts on all major digital platforms April 26 and on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on May 3. The Blu-ray and DVD will feature never-before-seen bonus material as a special treat for fans, including 7 deleted scenes, 3 featurettes, and audio commentary with director Domee Shi. It arrives just in time for Mother’s Day.
