Dev Patel Makes a Directorial Splash with ‘Monkey Man’: A Gripping Tale of Vengeance and Redemption

In a remarkable shift from his celebrated performances on screen, Oscar® nominee Dev Patel steps into the director’s chair with an electrifying debut in “Monkey Man,” a gripping action thriller that plunges audiences into a world of visceral revenge and unyielding justice.

Drawing inspiration from the mythic strength of Hanuman, Patel’s feature directorial debut tells the story of Kid, portrayed by Patel himself, a shadowy figure navigating the treacherous underbelly of society. In a gritty underground fight club, Kid endures brutal beatings masked behind a gorilla facade, scraping by for survival in a city where the powerful prey on the powerless.

But when the ghosts of Kid’s past resurface, embodied by the heinous murder of his mother, a torrent of long-suppressed rage erupts. Armed with a mysterious scar and a burning desire for retribution, Kid embarks on a relentless quest to dismantle the corrupt elite who have systematically oppressed the downtrodden.

“Monkey Man” propels viewers through a pulse-pounding narrative, punctuated by exhilarating fight sequences and heart-stopping chases. Patel’s direction immerses audiences in a world where every shadow conceals a threat, every alleyway holds a secret, and every blow strikes with the force of righteous fury.

Joining Patel on this cinematic odyssey is a stellar international cast, including Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, and Sobhita Dhulipala.

Behind the scenes, Patel collaborates with co-writers Paul Angunawela and John Collee to craft a screenplay that crackles with tension and authenticity, drawing audiences deeper into Kid’s harrowing journey of self-discovery and redemption.

“Monkey Man” is only in theaters on April 5.
