People have been buzzing about A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet, Monica Barbaro, Elle Fanning, and Edward Norton, long before the movie came out. The musical drama biopic directed and co-written by James Mangold, along with Jay Cocks, is a heavy favorite this award season, having earned multiple nominations and already several wins.
The movie is based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! and is about the iconic journey of legendary folksinger Bob Dylan, charting his early success and his groundbreaking use of electric instruments, specifically at the 1965 Newport folk festival.
Searchlight Pictures released the film in December of 2024, and it gained swift international praise. The title is part of the chorus from 1965’s “Like a Rolling Stone,“ one of Dylan’s most beloved songs. As a true story, the film highlights the singer-songwriter during one of music’s greatest eras, thriving in the heart of New York City, detailing the bustling artistry happening in Greenwich Village.
Three-time Academy Award-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips and three-time Art Directors Guild (ADG) award-winning production designer François Audouy are behind the film’s exemplary looks, successfully transporting audiences to a different time. On Monday, January 6, at ASU FIDM in Downtown Los Angeles, Phillips and Audouy attended the opening night reception of “DESIGN BEHIND THE SCENES,” an extraordinary new exhibit celebrating the film’s costumes, props, and sets.
Director James Mangold was in attendance along with Monica Barbaro and costume designers Ruth Carter, Mark Bridges, Danny Glicker, Albert Wolsky, actress Lola Glaudini (Ray Donovan), and actor Jimmy Jean-Louis (Joy).
The “DESIGN BEHIND THE SCENES” exhibit at ASU FIDM is now open to the public through Saturday, January 18. Fans can view period-accurate costumes, set pieces, and props from the film, featuring designs by Phillips and Audouy. Visitors have the opportunity to see firsthand the items used by Timothée Chalamet (Bob Dylan), Edward Norton (Pete Seeger), Elle Fanning (Sylvie Russo), Monica Barbaro (Joan Baez), Boyd Holbrook (Johhnt Cash), and Scoot McNairy (Woody Guthrie).
