Damien Unleashed: Mark Indelicato Shines in the latest episode of ‘Hacks’

'I Love LA' highlights a night of dinner, dancing, and a little bit of debauchery for Damien and Deborah

The glittering lights of Los Angeles are flickering a little brighter thanks to the magnetic Mark Indelicato and his performance in the latest episode of Max’s Emmy-winning comedy Hacks. Episode four, titledI Love LA,” showcases a rare, vulnerable, and wildly entertaining glimpse into the life of one of the show’s fan-favorite characters: Damien. We didn’t just get another laugh-filled chapter in Deborah Vance’s (Jean Smart) comeback saga. We got to see Damien shine — and Indelicato makes sure you feel every beat of it.

The episode spotlights a night out in LA with Damien and Deborah.I just think it’s hilarious that Deborah’s last call for dinner is Damien,Indelicato said, laughing in a recent interview with Hollywood First Look. They end up having a night out on the town, really. And oh, what a night it is.

Set in the sprawling sparkle of Los Angeles,I Love LAsees Damien stepping out of the shadows — and into the nightlife — for once. As Deborah’s relationship with Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) remains strained, and her big career moment (the debut of her late-night talk show) ends with her alone, she’s in need of someone she can connect with. So, Deborah picks up the phone in an attempt to fill the seat next to her, and, to our surprise, who shows up but Damien, her ever-reliable assistant. The duo then embarks on an impromptu evening, leading them into heartfelt conversations, a stop at a gay nightclub, and a series of wild events. Zany antics ensue, providing the perfect opportunity for Deborah and Damien to dive deeper into each other’s lives.

It’s the first time — and I feel like the only time — you really see Damien letting his hair down,Indelicato shared. You see his life outside of work. That’s big. This episode is a stark (and fabulous) departure from the Damien we’ve known: the crisp, stoic right hand to Deborah’s larger-than-life comedy legend. But here, he’s dancing, flirting, and finally breathing. And fans are here for it.

For Indelicato, the episode’s title hits close to home. Literally.

I‘ve grown up most of my life here in LA,he said.We obviously experienced some very treacherous times with all of the fires recently. I don’t think any Angeleno wasn’t affected in some way… So, for this episode, where Damien is featured so heavily, to be called I Love LA, it just meant a lot. Because I really do.Indelicato’s personal affection for the city bleeds into his performance, giving this chapter of Hacks an unmistakable warmth. You feel it in the late-night neon, Damien’s rare smile, and Deborah’s surprising generosity.

At the heart of the episode is the fascinating — and often hilarious — relationship between Damien and Deborah Vance. On paper, they’re opposites. He’s a meticulous assistant; she’s a chaotic comedy icon. But as Indelicato puts it,they’re cut from the same cloth in a certain capacity.”

“I admire Damien’s work ethic in the same way I admire Deborah’s,he said. There’s a will to succeed — whatever that means for them.”

The unexpected bond between the two culminates in a moment that’s both heartwarming and empowering: Deborah accompanies Damien to a gay club simply because he wants to go.It’s kind of extracurricular, the Hacks star joked, but it reveals something about both of them.”

While Deborah Vance is famously self-serving, her night out with Damien proves she’s capable of small, sincere gestures. And Damien? He gets to live — even if just for a night — out loud.

Naturally, the conversation drifted to what Damien might be like outside the professional sphere. What, for example, would his dating profile look like? Indelicato didn’t miss a beat.I feel like Damien’s dating profile is very cut and dry. Like, it’s not giving jokes,he laughed. It’s like —This is what I’m looking for. These are my do’s and don’ts.He sets his boundaries very deliberately. That no-nonsense attitude? Classic Damien. And fans love him for it.

From Ugly Betty to Hacks, Indelicato continues to prove he has always been a star.Getting to play Damien over four seasons has been incredible,he said.I love that he’s good at his job and that he cares about being good at his job. That’s the only thing he really cares about.”

But beyond the hustle, Damien is finally getting some heart.

Looking back at some of his favorite moments from Hacks, Indelicato recalls something from season one — and it has nothing to do with his character. It was right at the end of filming,he recalled. There was a taco truck, and Hannah [Einbinder] and I were sitting there eating tacos. I remember saying to her,Your life is about to change.’ Spoiler alert: He was right. She’s one of my best friends to this day,he said. And I still throw it in her face that I called it. She’s on the trajectory of being one of the greatest talents we’ve ever seen.”

You can catch the latest episode of Hacks out on Max now. I Love LAis a love letter to Los Angeles, to letting go, and to finally seeing Damien in his element.

Damien dances his way into our hearts this episode and Indelicato is loving the moment.
