Time to cry tears of joy! The White Lotus star Will Sharpe is set to direct the highly anticipated feature film adaptation of Crying in H Mart, the New York Times best-selling memoir of Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner. Zauner says Sharpe is the “perfect director” to adapt her book for the big screen. The book was first published in 2021 and became an instant bestseller. The memoir chronicled Zauner’s life as a Korean American. The book spent 60 weeks on the New York Times best-selling hardcover nonfiction list and details the tragic loss of her mother to pancreatic cancer. MGM’s Orion Pictures won the rights to adapt the book into a feature film and attached Stacey Sher and Jason Kim to produce. Zauner, who leads the alternative pop band Japanese Breakfast, will provide both the screenplay and soundtrack.
Sharpe also directed Flowers (2016-2018) and Landscapers (2021). The 36-year-old Japanese English actor most recently played Ethan Spiller in the second season of HBO’s The White Lotus and said the book resonated with him.
