Disney+ has just released the trailer and key art for “Chang Can Dunk,” giving fans a peek at one of the first Asian male-led young adult stories. The new Original Film premieres exclusively on the streaming giant on March 10.
Jingyi Shao, who was on Variety’s list of “10 Directors To Watch” for 2023, makes his feature film debut as a writer and director with “Chang Can Dunk.” The film follows Chang (Bloom Li), a 16-year-old, 5′ 8″ Asian American high school student in the marching band, who makes a bet with the school basketball star (Chase Liefeld) that he can dunk by Homecoming. It sends Chang on a 12-week quest to impress his crush and finally gain the attention and respect of his high school peers, leading him to reexamine everything he knows about himself, his friendships, and his family.
“This movie is my love letter to basketball and about how it helped me better understand family, friendship, and the Asian American/immigrant experience,” Shao said in a statement. The director better explained the importance of believing in yourself and how it’s essential in breaking down barriers.
Producers Rishi Rajani and Lena Waithe added how proud they are of the film. “Chang Can Dunk” is about pursuing that dream we all had that we thought would somehow make our lives better. “[It’s about] the desire to be seen and the lessons we learn along the way. It’s inspiring, empowering, and full of humor and heart,” they added to the statement.
In addition to Li and Liefeld, the film stars Dexter Darden, Ben Wang, Zoe Renee, and Mardy Ma. Brad Weston joins Rajani and Waithe as producer, and Pamela Thur serves as executive producer.
