Brooklyn’s Reel Works 20th Annual Benefit Gala

The Reel Works’ 20th Annual Benefit Gala is happening next week on May 26th and it’s set to honor change-maker Issa Rae, the star of the series Insecure. Reel Works is a Brooklyn-based youth media and workforce readiness program that matches underprivileged Black and indigenous people of color young adults with professional filmmaker-mentors as a pathway to success for work readiness. Broadway star Bryan Terrell Clark will be hosting the event. In the last year alone they have worked with 775 young adults from all over the country and paired 66 filmmakers with mentors to create 28 films. Previous honorees include “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler and Gabourey Sidibe.

Reel Works is a Brooklyn-based youth media and workforce readiness program that matches underprivileged BIPOC young adults with professional filmmaker-mentors as a pathway to success for work readiness. This year marks their landmark 20th anniversary while the arts education nonprofit has now pivoted during the pandemic to go virtually. In the last year alone they have worked with 775 young adults from all over the country and paired 66 filmmakers with mentors to create 28 films that have exceeded all expectations.
