AAPI Talent Shines Bright at the Oscars and Makes History

On an unforgettable night at the 95th Academy Awards, Michelle Yeoh won the Oscar for best actress in a leading role for her incredible performance as Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once, becoming the first Asian woman to win the prestigious award.

The Malaysian-born actress gave an inspirational speech amid a standing ovation at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

“For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities.” She added, “and ladies, don’t let anybody tell you, you are ever past your prime. Never give up.”

She thanked her mother, cast, team members, and everyone who helped her in her career.

Yeoh also made history as the first Asian woman to win outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, according to Variety. And her performance as Evelyn Wang also earned her the Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture musical/comedy, thus cementing her dominance as the best actress in a leading role this award season and leaving her mark in cinematic history.

But Yeoh was not the only big winner of the night. Her fellow cast member and on-screen husband Ke Huy Quan won the Oscar for best actor in a supporting role for his performance as Waymond Wang. He is only the second Asian performer to win in this category in Oscars history, per The Hollywood Reporter. At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, he made history as the first Asian man to win for outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role. Quan also received many other awards for his portrayal of Waymond Wang, including a Golden Globe, a Critics Choice award, and a Hollywood Critics Association award.

After receiving his Oscar statuette, Quan gave an emotional speech in which he encouraged viewers and audience members to never give up on dreams and to keep those dreams alive.

“My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp, and somehow, I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage,” he said, fighting back the tears. He continued, “they say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This is the American dream!”

Everything Everywhere All at Once was also crowned best picture during Hollywood’s biggest night. Its creators, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, took home Oscars for best original screenplay and best directing. Paul Rogers took the Oscar for best film editing for the sci-fi action comedy.

India was also well-represented at the Academy Awards this year. Fan and critics’ film favorite RRR scored an Oscar for best original song with its insanely popular “Naatu Naatu.” This was India’s first win in this category, according to BBC. “Naatu Naatu” composer M.M. Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose were present to receive their awards for the song. In his speech, Keeravani even serenaded the audience with his version of The Carpenters’ classic, “Top of the World.”

Another big first win for India was for best documentary short film. Kartiki Gonsalves and Guneet Monga won in this category with The Elephant Whisperers. Gonsalves directed the documentary, which follows an indigenous couple in South India as they care for an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu. Monga produced the film through her company Sikhya Entertainment. This was the first time Indian filmmakers won awards for directing-producing per Deadline. Gonsalves thanked her team, family, and “my motherland India,” while Monga, who was among the first producers from India to be inducted into the academy, celebrated the momentous occasion with posts on her social media platforms.
