When RubberBand talks about their upcoming North American tour, the mood is warm, curious, and open, just like the band itself. The Cantopop sensation is calling this run of shows “A Night In,” a title that reflects exactly how they want audiences to feel.
Hollywood First Look’s Sari Cohen sat down with singer Mau Hou-cheong, guitarist Clement Fung Ting-ching, and drummer Lai Man-wang to talk about what fans can expect. Bassist Lee Siu-wai was unavailable.
“We decided not to use any specific names, any song titles,” the band explains. “We just wanted to have a name with no expectation.” Instead of framing the tour around an album concept, they leaned into place and presence: “A night in London, a night in Manchester, a night in New York, a night in Vancouver.” Inspired partly by their love for Queen’s A Night at the Opera, the idea is simple—wherever RubberBand are, that night belongs to the city and the people in the room.
This January, that means four tightly packed North American stops: San Francisco, Vancouver, Toronto, and New York City. While they’ve played in Canada and other parts of the U.S. before, this will be their first time playing shows in New York and San Francisco. The trio expressed excitement about the chance to check these cities off their list, catch up with friends, and share the experience with loved ones.
Onstage, fans can expect something both familiar and fresh this time around. “First of all, [we’ll be performing] new songs from our new album,” the band reveals. Though the album isn’t out yet, RubberBand have nearly finished it, and they’re eager to share. At the same time, their deep catalog—11 albums since forming in the mid-2000s—means surprises. “There are a lot of songs that we haven’t played live,” they note, especially outside of Hong Kong. “Some of our fans might get surprises.”
There’s also a RubberBand tradition that won’t change. “We want our audience to dance with us, to sing along with us,” they say. “Most of our songs are easy to just move along with the groove.” The shows are built for energy exchange, not perfection. As they put it, “They can take some energy, the vibe from us, and we can take some… exchange of energy.”
That spirit extends to a special segment they’ve been experimenting with on this tour: tributes to artists they love. In the UK, they performed the Beatles’ “Nowhere Man.” In North America, they’ll choose another song that can “echo with our own songs.” It’s still undecided—but that openness is part of the fun.
This tour also lands as RubberBand approaches a major milestone: nearly 20 years together. It’s a special moment that means a lot to all of them. “It’s incredible that we came so far. We’re still together. That’s actually a miracle.” Different backgrounds, different personalities—and yet, “there are still moments [we learn from each other].”
Looking ahead, the band are far from done dreaming. From Boston to Miami, DC, Latin America, even Africa, their bucket list keeps growing. “Dream big,” they say simply.
And then there’s the new album. Continuing their alphabetical album series, they’re now on the letter K. The title, “KOMOREBI,” is a Japanese word describing sunlight filtering through leaves. Recorded in Tokyo with 12 tracks, the album has been a year in the making and is set to be completed in early 2026.
For now, RubberBand’s message to North American fans is straightforward. “Just have a great time with us,” After 20 years of friendship, music, and shared nights around the world, that invitation feels like a promise.
